AC Not Turning On in Kadapa: 7 Causes and Quick Fixes

May 2, 2026 7 min read +91 73821 73629WhatsApp

If your AC is completely dead (no display, no beep, no fan, nothing happens when you press power), the cause is usually electrical and surprisingly cheap to fix. Before paying for a technician visit, run through these 7 checks. Most cost nothing and one of them will almost certainly bring your AC back to life.

1. The MCB has tripped (most common cause in Kadapa)

Walk to your main electrical switchboard and look for the MCB labelled AC, Bedroom AC, or sometimes just 16A. If the lever is down or sitting in the middle, push it firmly UP. Many Kadapa homes see this every monsoon when a small surge during a thunderstorm trips the breaker.

If the MCB trips again within seconds of resetting it, do NOT keep flipping it. There is a short circuit somewhere in the AC and you need a technician.

2. Remote batteries are dead or the IR sensor is blocked

Try this: open your phone camera, point the remote at it, and press any button. You should see a small white/purple light blink at the remote tip. No light means dead batteries (replace with fresh Duracell or Eveready, not loose ones lying in a drawer).

If the remote works on camera but the AC doesn't respond, check that nothing (curtain, dust, decorative piece) is blocking the IR receiver on the indoor unit's display panel.

3. Stabilizer fault

Most ACs in Kadapa are connected through a servo stabilizer to handle voltage fluctuations. The stabilizer has its own fuse and its own input/output indicators. If the input light is on but the output light is off, the stabilizer is faulty (₹500 to ₹1,500 to repair, or ₹2,500 to ₹4,500 to replace with a good one). Bypass it temporarily by plugging the AC directly into the wall to confirm.

4. Loose plug or burnt socket

Pull the AC plug out and look at the socket. Black soot, melted plastic, or a loose-feeling plug means the socket needs replacement. Running an AC through a loose socket is a fire hazard. Cost: ₹250 to ₹500 to replace the socket and tighten the wiring. Never use a cheap multi-plug for a 1.5 ton AC.

5. Failed capacitor

If the indoor unit lights up and you hear a click but the outdoor unit fan and compressor never start, the run capacitor on the outdoor unit has likely failed. This is one of the most common AC faults in Kadapa (heat shortens capacitor life). Replacement is ₹600 to ₹1,200 including labour and the AC works perfectly again within 30 minutes.

6. PCB damage from voltage spike

If the AC is completely dead with no display even when plugged in directly, the indoor PCB has likely been damaged by a voltage surge. Symptoms include burnt smell, visible black spots on the board, or no response to remote AND no manual switch response. Repair ₹1,500 to ₹3,500. New OEM PCB ₹3,500 to ₹6,500.

7. Compressor or contactor failure (rare)

Only after ruling out the above 6 causes should you suspect the compressor itself. A failed contactor (the relay that switches the compressor on) costs ₹700 to ₹1,500. A genuinely dead compressor costs ₹6,000 to ₹12,000 to replace. Any technician quoting compressor replacement without first checking the capacitor and contactor is either lazy or dishonest.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my AC not turning on at all?+

Nine times out of ten it is one of three things: a tripped MCB at your main switchboard, a dead remote (drained batteries or sensor blocked), or a blown stabilizer fuse. Check those before assuming the AC itself has failed.

AC display is on but it won't start cooling. Is the compressor dead?+

Not necessarily. If the indoor unit powers up but the outdoor unit stays silent for 3 to 5 minutes, that delay is normal (compressor protection). If it stays silent beyond 5 minutes, the most common cause is a failed capacitor (₹600 to ₹1,200) or a stuck contactor relay, not a dead compressor.

How much does it cost to fix an AC that won't turn on?+

Capacitor replacement ₹600 to ₹1,200. Remote replacement ₹400 to ₹800. PCB repair ₹1,500 to ₹3,500. Stabilizer fault ₹500 to ₹1,500. Full compressor replacement is rare and runs ₹6,000 to ₹12,000 depending on tonnage.

Does Kadapa's voltage drop kill AC PCBs?+

Yes, frequently. Voltage dips below 180V or spikes above 250V damage the PCB and capacitor over time. A good servo stabilizer (₹2,500 to ₹4,500) pays for itself within 1 to 2 years by preventing PCB failures.

Can I check anything myself before calling a technician?+

Three safe checks: (1) Press the MCB up firmly, then test. (2) Replace remote batteries with fresh ones (not just any old AAA). (3) Confirm the AC plug is fully seated and the stabilizer's indicator light is on. If all three are fine, call us for a free diagnosis.
